A Seismic Event!
A lesser-known aspect of Pioneer Square's historic brick facades is the danger they pose in the event of an earthquake. The neighborhood is home to a significant number of unreinforced masonry buildings that threaten both businesses and tenants. Currently, the City of Seattle does not require landlords to retrofit their properties, meaning the onus of earthquake preparedness falls largely on renters.
This awareness campaign takes a cheeky approach to earthquake safety, inviting tenants to be the guests of honor at the (seismic) event of the year. The invitation encourages renters to start a dialog with landlords and city officials about retrofitting, informs them of safety risks, and provides a map of unreinforced buildings in Pioneer Square.
